The 61st Avenue Phase III Capacity Expansion Project marks the final phase of improvements to the 61st Avenue Corridor within the City of Hobart. Phase 3 is funded in part with Surface Transportation Programming (STP) Group I funds obtained by the City of Hobart over several years of competitive application submittals though the Metropolitan Planning Organization, Northwest Indiana Regional Planning Commission (NIRPC). The Local Match allocations have been provided by the City of Hobart Redevelopment Commission, Hobart Sanitary District, and Lake County Highway. This collaborative team effort has promoted the project in positive light, successfully delivering the largest fiscal allocation to any one project to date under NIRPC’s Transportation Improvement Program.

The improvements being completed under Phase 3 begin near Arizona Street and continue east to State Road 51 and include the widening of the roadway to include a continuous center lane. Additionally, the project will provide:

  • rehabilitation and widening of the 61st Avenue Bridge over Deep River
  • intersection improvements at Wisconsin Street through the construction of a roundabout
  • dedicated turn lanes from Wisconsin Street to SR51
  • storm sewer improvements along the entire length including curb and gutter
  • regional storm water detention east of Deep River
  • sanitary sewer main and lateral installation
  • water main installation
  • sidewalk installation along the northern side of the corridor
  • lighting improvements
  • gateway & landscaping features from Deep River Drive to SR51

This project includes the first roundabout intersection in the City of Hobart. The City encourages drivers to utilize the resources listed below to familiarize themselves with the traffic operations of a roundabout.

Upon completion of the project residents adjacent to 61st Avenue from Arizona Street to SR51 will have the availability of sanitary sewers. The Hobart Sanitary District will provide future direction on connection procedures.
